Masterclasses
5-day masterclass "Box Binding" by Jacek Tylkowski (Poland)
Photo author: Jacek Tylkowski
Monday 26 to Friday 30 of May 2025
The box binding technique was developed and refined by the Czech master bookbinder Jan Sobota, renowned for his innovative approach to the art of bookbinding.
With this method, the book is integrated into a box structure, and the book cover takes the shape of a box.
The box serves both as protection and as a form of artistic expression, making each book a unique work of art.
The box-like structure allows for unique spatial forms and can also reflect the specific content of the book.
Costs: € 785,- incl. coffee/tea, an extensive lunch and all necessary materials.
Location: Boekbindcentrum Echten
Time: al days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Three-day masterclass "Playing with images on metal leaf and mixed media" by Susana Dominguez Martin (Spain)
Friday 12th, Saturday 13th, and Sunday 14th of September 2025
In this masterclass, participants will explore fun techniques for combining images with metal leaf or other mixed media materials.
Participants can choose images from Susana’s personal photo collection.
Once the images are prepared, participants will bind them using one of two possible methods:
the functional and elegant Hajna binding designed by Cor Aerssens or the playful Caterpillar structure, a creative invention by Susana herself.
Both techniques are practical, as they allow the images to be easily removed, updated, or supplemented.
This way, your creation will always stay "up to date."
Costs: € 490,- incl. coffee/tea, an extensive lunch and all necessary materials.
Location: Boekbindcentrum Echten
Time: all days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m
Three-day masterclass "Bambalina Binding" OR "Decorative Stubs" led by Susana Dominguez Martin (Spain)
Tuesday 16th, Wednesday 17th, and Thursday 18th of September 2025
It will be a mixed class; you can choose whether to create a Bambalina binding or work on Decorative Stubs
Bambalina binding
The ‘Bambalina’ structure, conceived by Susana Domínguez Martín, is a structure in which the spine of the block undergoes some minimal intervention in order to bind it.
This structure can be described as a ‘sliding spine’ binding, as it describes how the spine works on opening the book.
The Bambalina can be accomplished going through a variety of processes, from quite simple to more complex, depending on the finishing we want to give to it.
This course also provides students with the possibility to explore some non-conventional materials such as Tyvek, copper in sheets, printed acetates, stone paper, laminated wood, …
In this course students will work a variety of complex finishings, such as turn-ins and beveling in the openings for the spine.
The students will make 1 Bambalina.
Costs: € 490,- incl. coffee/tea, an extensive lunch and all necessary materials.
Location: Bookbinding Center Echten
Time: all days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Decorative Stubs
In this masterclass we will learn about stubs/meeting guards and their different uses.
The masterclass will focus on meeting guards for single sheets, followed by stubs for signatures.
Single sheets
- Meeting guards for oriental binding
- Meeting guard for adding a single sheet to a signature with a flat spine
- Meeting guard for adding a single sheet to a signature with a rounded spine and shoulder
- Meeting guards for concertinas made of single sheets with back and front joints
Signatures (codex)
- Stubs for oriental bindings
- Sewing signatures onto stubs
During the masterclass students will make two bindings:
• an oriental guarded or stubbed binding, consisting either of single sheets or signatures or both
• a codex binding sewn onto stubs. The codex may consist of single sheets put together, signatures and, or concertinas in different widths and heights
Costs: € 490,- incl. coffee/tea, an extensive lunch and all necessary materials.
Location: Boekbindcentrum Echten
Time: all days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
